Domain Authority (DA) is a search engine ranking by Moz, developed by the search engine that predicts how well a website will score on search engine search engine pages (SERPs).
The score of a domain authority varies from one to 100, with higher scores corresponding to a greater judgment. Domain authority is calculated by evaluating multiple factors, including the linking of main domains and the number of total links, in a single DA score. This score can then be used when comparing websites or following the "rankingstrength" of a website over time. You can view the DA of a website with MozBar (a free Chrome extension), Link Explorer (an analysis tool for backlinks), the SERP analysis section of Keyword Explorer and dozens of other SEO tools on the internet.
How does domain authority score?
We assess domain authority on a logarithmic scale of 100 points. So it's considerably easier to grow your score from 20 to 30 than to grow from 70 to 80.
What is a "good" domain authority?
In general, sites with a very large number of high-quality external links (such as Wikipedia or Google.com) are at the top of the Domain Authority scale, while small businesses and websites with fewer incoming links may have a much lower DA score . Brand new websites always start with a domain authority score of one. Because the Domain Authority is meant to be a predictor of the ranking ability of a site, having a very high DA score should not be your only goal. Look at the DA scores for the sites with which you compete directly in the SERPs and strive for a higher score than your competitors. It is best used as a comparative statistic (instead of an absolute, concrete score) when doing research in the search results and to determine which sites may have more powerful / important link profiles than others. Because it is a comparative tool, there is not necessarily a "good" or "bad" score from the domain authority.
Domain authority versus page authority
While the domain measures the predictive order of entire domains or subdomains, Page Authority measures the power of individual pages.
Where can you find Domain Authority?
Domain Authority statistics are included in dozens of SEO and online marketing platforms on the web. In the Moz ecosystem you can measure the use of Domain Manager Link Explorer, MozBar (the free SEO toolbar from Moz), or in the SERP analysis section of Keyword Explorer. Authority statistics are also included in all Moz Pro campaigns, as well as our API.
Technical definition of domain authority
Domain authority is based on data from our Link Explorer Web Index and uses dozens of factors in the calculations. The actual calculation of the domain authority itself uses a machine learning model to predictably find a "best fit" algorithm that best correlates our link data with rankings over thousands of current search results that we use as scaling standards. Since Authority is based on machine learning calculations, your site's score will often fluctuate as more, fewer, or different data points are used in the calculation - for example, if Facebook would acquire a billion new links, everyone's PA and DA would be relative to Facebook. Therefore, keep in mind that you should always use Domain Management as relative statistics to compare with the link profiles of other sites, as opposed to an absolute value that scores the effectiveness of your internal SEO efforts.
How can I influence Domain Authority?
Domain authority is difficult to directly influence. It consists of a collection of measurement data and link data that influence the authority score. This is done intentionally; This statistic is meant to determine how competitive a particular site is in Google search results. Since Google takes many factors into account, a statistic that attempts to calculate them must also include many factors. The best way to influence Domain Management statistics is to improve your overall SEO. In particular, you should focus on your link profile by getting more links from other well-connected pages.
Why did my authority change?
Because Domain Authority (and incidentally Page Authority) consists of several metrics and calculations, it can be a challenge to accurately determine the exact cause of a change. If your score has gone up or down, there are many potential influencing factors.
